Suffolk gas line damaged this morning now fixed

SUFFOLK A damaged gas line that prompted the evacuation of several homes around Cedar Street and Hall Avenue has been fixed, the city said. A contractor at the intersection of Hall Avenue and Commerce Street damaged the line while working there about 11:39 a.m., according to a news release. It was repaired at 1:20 p.m.

SUFFOLK Plans to build an electrical generating plant to turn methane gas from the regional landfill into clean energy are a step closer to reality. The Southeastern Public Service Authority's board of directors has approved a plan, three years in the making, to sell landfill gas to GPC Green Energy LLC.

A man's girlfriend was charged after he was struck by a car and taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in serious condition Sunday morning. Shannon M. Goldston, 21, of Suffolk was charged with malicious wounding, hit-and-run property damage, driving a motor vehicle while license is suspended or revoked, and reckless driving, a Suffolk police news release said.

SUFFOLK Marquez Clifton Bishop was 19 in June 2009 when a new neighbor moved in nearby. The girl was 13. She wanted to show Bishop the dress she'd worn the night she had graduated from eighth grade. He went with her to her apartment in North Suffolk, and with no one else at home, Bishop made advances toward the girl, according to court testimony.

2nd arrest made in 1994 Suffolk home invasion

SUFFOLK Police have arrested a second person in a 1994 home invasion that left one man dead. James Henry Bullock, 37, faces a host of charges, including first-degree murder, robbery, armed burglary and three counts of use of a firearm. Bullock was already jailed in Norfolk in an unrelated incident, police said.

Suffolk board, council to meet on school impasse

The School Board decided Thursday to schedule a meeting with the City Council to discuss how to select a site for a new elementary school.
Nine options are on the table, Chairwoman Lorraine Skeeter said, declining to elaborate. The School Board would like to talk with the council by Sept. 9, the date of the board's next monthly meeting.

Courtland woman dies in single-car wreck in Suffolk

SUFFOLK A 59-year-old Courtland woman died in a crash Thursday morning on South Quay Road. Patricia Ann Hornok was headed east in the 7600 block of S. Quay Road about 1 a.m. when her vehicle ran off the right side of the road, crossed a ditch and hit a high bank, according to a city news release. Hornok was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
