Hurricane Earl's winds drop to 110 mph as it nears N.C., Va.
8:23 pm - The storm was downgraded to a Category 2 this evening, with the center expected to pass near the Outer Banks later tonight. Earl is expected to continue weakening overnight and into Friday.
