Two who were killed in I-64 crash in Norfolk are identified

NORFOLK State police have identified two people killed Monday night in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 west at Tidewater Drive. 

State police: Deaths on Va. highways reached 16-year low in 2008

Four people died during the New Year’s holiday weekend, but state police say the number of fatalities in the state last year dropped to a 16-year low.

Across the state, 808 people died in crashes on the state’s highways, including 73 pedestrians, according to a state police news release.

One person killed, another charged in Virginia Beach crash

VIRGINIA BEACH  The passenger of a truck was killed and the driver charged after the vehicle rolled over Monday night in the 2700 block of Seaboard Road, police said. 

Light-rail work to alter traffic at Norfolk intersection

NORFOLK Traffic patterns will change at the intersection of Monticello and City Hall avenues after the evening rush hour tonight as a result of utility relocation for the light rail. The new configuration will last through early March. The two inside, westbound lanes of City Hall will close at the intersection of Monticello. All westbound traffic will be required to turn right on Monticello.

Norfolk could reap $29M for light-rail naming rights

NORFOLK Selling naming rights to light-rail stations, park-and-ride lots, or even the entire rail system could reap nearly $29 million in revenue to help pay for running the system, a study shows. While the city and Hampton Roads Transit have not decided whether to pursue the idea, the transit agency hired a consultant to explore its potential.

Charlotte light rail ridership down in November

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  Officials say the recent drop in gas prices may be part of the reason why light-rail ridership fell for the month of November in the Charlotte area.

The Lynx Blue Line handled an average of 15,551 trips each week in November, down from 16,470 per week in October.

Virginia could set a record low for traffic fatalities in 2008

RICHMOND Virginia State Police say 803 had died on Virginia's roadways through Tuesday. That's 218 fewer than 2007 and would be the least in more than 40 years the agency has tracked highway deaths.

The lowest number of deaths a year is 839, set in 1992.

Man charged in Beach crash in which passenger was killed

VIRGINIA BEACH Police have identified a man who died Sunday night in a crash on Wolfsnare Road and announced charges against the driver of the vehicle in which the man was riding. Police were called about the crash, in the 2100 block of Wolfsnare, shortly after 11 p.m. after a Honda Accord ran off the left side of the road and hit a tree, police wrote in a news release.

Northbound lanes of Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel reopened

A crash involving nine to 10 vehicles that shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 664 at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel has cleared, said state police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Cotten. At about 3:45 p.m. a tractor-trailer filled with peanuts struck a Camaro inside the tunnel, Cotten said.
