Portsmouth School Board’s proposed budget includes pay hikes

PORTSMOUTH

In a unanimous vote Thursday night, the School Board approved a $155.5 million proposed budget that would provide teachers an average pay raise of about 6.5 percent at a cost of about $4.4 million next school year.

School officials say the raises would complete a longtime endeavor to bring educators’ salaries up to par with those of teachers in neighboring cities.

City, state and federal governments fund the school system. Portsmouth schools should receive about $5.1 million in new money from the state. Now, school officials are asking for about $3.8 million in new money from the city.

The City Council is expected to approve its budget next month, and afterward the School Board should approve a final budget.

Elections Upcoming?

Must be time for school board elections...my big question: where has the board been prior to now that they have to play catch-up to other locality salary ranges in quest for hiring and retaining the brightest and the best for our kids in P-Town?
