Parking in downtown Norfolk will soon get tougher

Posted to: News Norfolk

About 1,500 people who park downtown will soon have to shuttle or hoof it to work or school from outlying lots or cough up extra dough to continue parking closer.

The Monticello Avenue parking garage and surface lot will close next Saturday so construction can begin on the $150 million Wachovia Center.

Nearly 1,250 spaces will be lost for two years of construction between the loss of the garage, the lot and on-street metered spaces. More than 1,500 patrons use those spaces daily, including many who park for events at Scope, Chrysler Hall, the Norva and Roper Theater.

The city is providing alternate parking, mainly at satellite lots.

Catch a Bus

Plain and simple, catch a bus. In Norfolk, they run until midnight/1 AM seven days a week. HRT: perhaps a regional system of park & rides are in order.
