Derrius Walton, a former Lake Taylor High School football player, was shot and killed early Saturday morning in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Walton was a freshman at Division-II Phoenix College.

“There’s no indication whatsoever that Derrius was involved in any wrongdoing,” athletic director Scott Geddis said. “Our focus right now is to take care of his family and the players on the team – and they’re devastated right now.”

Walton, 20, was shot outside Buzz, an 18-and-over nightclub.

Walton played quarterback, defensive back and linebacker at Lake Taylor. As a senior in 2005, he helped the Titans to the Eastern District championship and was a second-team All-Tidewater selection at linebacker.

“We’re definitely saddened and in shock,” Lake Taylor coach Hank Sawyer said.

Phoenix College student Ryan Cuillory, 19, a friend of Walton’s, also was shot and on Monday was listed in critical condition, according to Scottsdale Police.

The East Valley Tribune’s web site reported that an argument in the club carried into the parking lot, where Walton and Cuillory were shot around 1:55 a.m.
