Norfolk Southern to pay $4M penalty for deadly chlorine spill
Norfolk Southern Railway Co. will pay $4 million to resolve allegations that it violated federal environmental laws in a chlorine spill that killed nine people in South Carolina in 2005, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The settlement was announced a little more than five years after the Jan. 6, 2005, derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in Graniteville, S.C., about a 150-mile drive northwest of Charleston.
